Adapted courses

Adapted Swimming courses

Adapted swimming courses are a unique and specially tailored swimmingteaching for children and youth with mental and physical disabilities. Everyone is welcome regardless of swimming ability. The course is divided into levels: beginner, intermediate, and finally training in a dedicated swimming group. The swimming groups are called F3 and Superswimmers.

The instruction takes place for 45 minutes at Volla Swimming Hall on Wednesday afternoons and evenings. We have access to a chair lift and a private changing room with a shower.

The courses are tailored to each participant’s specific needs in smaller groups, where we find the path to water safety and swimming skills through unique methods and customized approaches for every individual.

With water's unique properties , participants will not only become better swimmers, but also improve balance, endurance, and motoric skills. The foundation for all exercises are funnny games, adapted tasks, and relationship building. Everything is tailored to each participant’s level and challenges.

The para-coaches are trained to conduct para courses through the Norwegian Swimming Federation.

If a participant has both physical and mental disabilities, they will receive instruction in the group for physical disabilities.

We will also assess whether the participant can take part in the regular swimming courses from Hval up to Hai. It is perfectly fine to switch from Hval–Hai to a para course.

We continuously evaluate whether the participant is ready for the next level.

All participants start with a support person in the water. Exceptions can be made if a support person is not needed or can stay on land. We always assess whether there is a need for a support person in the water.

Information About the Courses for Participants With Mental Disabilities

Para Swimming Course – Beginner

The swimming instruction consists of water adaption, diving, floating, gliding, and propulsion using kicking and arm movements. Participants also practice becoming comfortable in deep water. This is done through social interaction, adapted exercises, and often the use of pictures and objects. It is not only the exercises themselves that matter, but equally important is creating a good psychosocial learning environment in a small group.

When the child or youth has mastered the goals of the course, they will move on to the intermediate course.

Support Person at the beginner course

In the first sessions, the participant must bring a support person who preferably enters the water. We continuously assess whether a support person is needed in the water.

The support person’s task is to keep the participant safe, provide support, and if possible perform the exercises together with the child.

Support persons receive guidance throughout the session and act as a link between the instructor and the participant, using tailored exercises through appropriate play, visual aids, and relationship building. The support person does not need to be a skilled swimmer. Exercises are adapted to what the support person is capable of performing.

The instruction is based on plenty of play and tailored challenges to help participants become as independent and safe in the water as possible.

Para Swimming Course – Intermediate

Participants have achieved all sub-goals in the beginner para course and have started practicing in deep water. In this course, participants learn to become fully safe in deep water, and swim longer distances both on their front and back. They will also dive to the bottom at depths of around 2 meters. The goal is to be fully safe independently and to swim distances from 12.5 meters and further. Participants will also learn the swimming strokes: freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke as far as possible.

Support Person at the intermediate course

As the participant grows more confident, the support person often stays on land. However, we may still require a support person to enter the water, so they should be prepared with swimwear.

When the participant has completed the course, they are offered to join the para group Superswimmers, where they can participate in competitions, swim longer distances, use swimming as training, and have fun in a larger group.

Para Course – Beginner

It is common for people with physical disabilities to experience much greater freedom of movement in water than in air.  Water shifts the body’s center of gravity and allows the muscles to work with less strain. We aim to promote movement, water balance, and water awareness through various techniques so that the participant achieves the best swimming ability possible.

We tailor exercises for each participant to build good swimming skills that are both challenging and enjoyable. We create an individualized plan for swimming instruction, consisting of water adjustment, diving, floating, gliding, and propulsion as able. We also practice becoming safe in deep water, and achieving propulsion close to the techniques of breaststroke, freestyle, and backstroke as far as possible. We have access to a chair lift and can use additional support equipment when needed.

Support Person

In the first sessions, the participant must bring a support person. During registration, we will ask about swimming skills and assess whether a support person is needed in the water. The support person is responsible for dressing and showering assistance.

Para Course – Intermediate

Participants have achieved the goals of the beginner physical para course. They have developed water balance and awareness, can dive well, and have some propulsion in the water. We continue working on becoming more confident in deep water and swimming longer distances—often without a support person.

We aim to approach the swimming strokes freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly as far as possible. When the course is completed, the participant should be fully safe in deep water. Once swimming proficiency is achieved, they are ready for the F3 swimming group.

Swimming Groups

F3
